VALU SINGLE'S LIFEGROUPS

The Shift: Courageously Moving from Season to Season by Keion Henderson

Discover a renewed sense of your purpose and the courage to move from what it is to what can be.

We have a tendency to think of our present situation in polarizing terms: good and bad, up and down.

Due to the seasonal nature of our life experiences, that's an easy trap for many of us. We overlook the fact that there are seasons in between, such as the season between graduation and the amazing job; between divorce and remarriage; between the failure and the success. When God is shifting us to a new level or season, there will inevitably be moments of conflict, confusion, and crisis. The Shift explores the ways we can survive times of transition with a courage that only comes when you're sure of God's purpose for your life.

Life is not about what happens to you. It's about how you respond to what has happened to you.

Facilitated by Cherii Palet Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.

Women in the New Testament by Linda Cohick

Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? Is the story of Martha of Bethany about homemaking? Were the women in Jesus’s genealogy all sexual sinners? Was Junia an apostle or not?

What do you really know about the women in the New Testament?

Often, the stories of the important women in the New Testament are left out of church teaching and Christian books. Or if they are told, they include myths and misperceptions.

In this course, Dr. Lynn Cohick, New Testament Professor and Provost of Northern Seminary, teaches the true stories of women in the Bible. She has written several books on women in the New Testament world and the early church.

Each session examines an aspect of the social and cultural world of the New Testament and explores a biblical woman’s story in relation to her context. The course looks at marriage, at motherhood, at discipleship, at patronage, at teaching, and at leadership as New Testament women live out their callings before God and in the Christian
community.

Women studied include:

• Mary, mother of Jesus

• Mary Magdalene
• Mary and Martha of Bethany
• Phoebe, Junia, Priscilla, Lydia
• Unnamed women such as the Samaritan woman and Jairus’s daughter. Come along and explore these lesser-known stories of women of faith. Trailer

Facilitated by Dr. Maggie Johnson-Glover Wednesdays at 6:30 PM.

Book of James w/ Francis Chan

True faith produces fruit. A faith without action and without life change is ultimately a dead faith. The book of James speaks to the realities of a living faith in Jesus—the kind of roll-up- your-sleeves and get-your-hands-dirty discipleship that is borne out of an authentic relationship with the risen Lord. James writes to believers who know suffering, who've faced trials, and who ultimately desire a deep relationship with God.

Francis Chan unpacks the dense truth contained in the book of James in front of the
iconic backdrop of San Francisco, the city where he lives and ministers. Through 12 sessions, Francis
works through James verse-by-verse, challenging followers of Christ to move beyond a private, intellectual knowledge of God and His Word, to a vibrant faith that impacts every square inch of life. See the trailer here.

Facilitated by Brenda Brooks Tuesdays at 6:30 PM.

In this five-part series, speaker and bestselling author Nona Jones will unpack practical ways to get out of the emotional, mental, and intellectual ruts we often find ourselves in. It’s time to get

LIFE BUILDER'S LIFEGROUPS

Our Foundations Class: LifeBuilders

This is for all those who wish to explore or enrich their faith and for new beginners or those starting afresh!

Welcome to new class to renew, review, or just introduce the central concepts behind our faith. This group is designed for anyone who wishes to better understand why we believe what we believe by returning to the basics and foundation of the roots of our faith to confirm what it means to follow Christ in today’s challenging world.

It is an 8-part course that will guide you in your walk of faith and rediscover the very basics of the Christian faith. In a typical week, you will interact with a biblical text and be encouraged to begin journaling, praying and memorizing biblical passages. Then you can listen to a thirty-minute talk with study notes provided, work through the reflection questions and then have two more days to reflect over what you are learning.

While the course was originally designed for new believers, we have found that it functions well as a foundation class for all believers. Leaders in our ministry are present each week to help you with your questions to guide you in your walk with our Lord!

When we became a follower of Jesus, we started on the spiritual journey of our life. We went through the gate of conversion and started up the path of discipleship. As we travel the path, we will start to change, not because we must but because we want to. We won't always make the right decisions; we will stumble, but Jesus and your fellow travelers are there to help you get back on your feet. The further you travel, the more you will learn about God, how to listen to him and how to talk with him. You will learn more deeply who God is, who Jesus is and what he did, and who the Holy Spirit is and what he does for us. And you will learn about walking with other believers (the “church”) and inviting others to join you (“evangelism”). Because life is a journey, God does not expect you to get everything right the first time; we are all on a learning curve and God is patient with us. However, we were never intended to walk alone. We were saved into a new family, with new brothers and sisters, and a new Father. In this study you are encouraged to find an older traveler and invite them to walk with you.

Facilitated by Sis. Shannon Easton Mondays at 6:30 PM.

BIBLE BASED LIFEGROUPS

MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT LIFEGROUPS

EMK’s: Those Experiencing God’s Calling into Ministry

Discerning Your Call to Ministry: How to Know For Sure and What to Do About It

If you are considering the ministry, there are two mistakes to avoid. The first is taking up a calling that isn’t yours. The second is neglecting one that is.

Discerning Your Call to Ministry will help you know the difference. A tool for seminary students, pastors-in-training, and even current pastors, it serves to confirm or prompt deep thought about

the calling to ministry through 10 probing questions, including:

  • Do you desire the ministry?
  • Does your church affirm your calling?
  • Do you love the people of God?
  • Are you willing to surrender?

Pastoral dropout rates are high, and seminary admission rates are declining—signs that many of us don’t quite know what we’re signing ourselves up for. Author Jason Allen, a former pastor and the president of North America’s fastest growing seminary, gives readers a better picture of the calling. Presenting a series of diagnostic questions informed by Scripture, church history, and his own experience, he helps those seeking ordination or ministry positions make confident decisions about their service to God, one way or the other.

Facilitated by Elder Butch Singleton Wednesdays at 6 PM.
