Pericope: Psalms 23:1-6 - The Lord is my shepherd, I lack
nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley, [a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Sermon Text: Psalms 23: 6 Surely your goodness and love will
follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Sermon Title: Who’s Got Your Back? Goodness and Mercy
Point 1: Surely… vs. 6 surely…
Point 2: Goodness…vs. 6 goodness…
Definition: The beneficial life-giving quality of God's character
and actions. His consistent disposition to bring well-being
blessings and wholeness to his people. It's more than moral
goodness; it's God's active generosity his will to give what is best,
not just what is needed.
ng mercy to help with the cause!
Point 3: Mercy…vs. 6…Mercy…
The definition of mercy is not what you think. The Hebrew word
means ”hesed” God's steadfast, loyal love rooted in covenant
commitment. It is his faithful, unfailing kindness that endures even
when we fail.
--Covenant loyalty Exodus 34: 6-7 - 6 And he passed in front of
Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and
gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and
faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving
wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty
unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin
of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”
---Compassionate forgiveness holding back the judgment we
deserve Lamentations 3: 22-23 - 22 Because of the Lord’s great
love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
---Persistent love that refuses to let go even when poisoned by
our own sin or enemies Micah 6: 8 - 8 He has shown you, O
mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly [a] with your God.
Point 4: Follow vs. 6 shall follow me…
Life Application:
1. Accept what you don't deserve God's goodness
2. Thank God that you didn't get what you did deserve mercy
3. Activate it with your confession
