WhyChurch? Pt 1: @TheTable

Memory Verse: Matt 16: 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on
this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not
prevail.
Pericope: 1 Cor 11:17-31 17 In the following directives I have no
praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In
the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church,
there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe
it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show
which of you have God’s approval. 20 So then, when you come
together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are
eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a
result, one person remains hungry and another gets
drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you
despise the church of God by humiliating those who have
nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not
in this matter!
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The
Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when
he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which
is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way,
after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new
covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in
remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and
drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in
an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and
blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine
themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the
cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of
Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many
among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen
asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves,
we would not come under such judgment.
Sermon Text: 1 Cor. 11:33-34 - 33 So then, my brothers, when
you come together to eat, wait for one another— 34 if anyone is
hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it
will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give
directions when I come
Sermon Title: WhyChurch? Pt 1: @TheTable
1. “I don’t do Church. Church is just not for me.”
2. “It’s full of hypocrites.”
3. “I only go for weddings or funerals.”
4. “My grandma makes me go when I visit.”
5. “It’s outdated and out of touch.”
6. “I get my peace and inspiration elsewhere.”
7. “Too many scandals.”
8. “I believe in something, but not religion.”
9. “The church judges people like me.”
10. “It’s just not necessary anymore.”
Point 1: Church community creates a promise. 11: 33 So when
you come together to eat wait for one another. 12: 26(b) if one
member is honored, all rejoice together. Matthew 18:20 For where
two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
God gave the promise of deliverance to the children of Israel
and to them individually. Everybody got houses they didn’t
build, vineyards they didn’t plant but the Promise Land was
given to community, and they all had to believe.
Gen. 11:6 - 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same
language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do
will be impossible for them.
Point 2: Community creates accountability and accountability
grows community. Vs. 21a - 21 For in eating, each one goes
ahead with his own meal…
Hebrews 10:25 - 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the
habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as
you see the Day drawing near.
– Heb. 10:25 msg - So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that
we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the
promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see
how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not
avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other
on, especially as we see the big Day
Point 3: Church community creates a caring community.
Vs. 33 -33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for
one another—
• Eph 4:2, 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient,
bearing with one another in love.
• Eph 4:32; 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
• Eph 5:19, 21; 19 speaking to one another with psalms,
hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from
your heart to the Lord,
• Eph 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Point 4: Church community creates a concentration of power.
Acts 2:1-4 - When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all
together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a
sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house
where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire
appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they
were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Life Application:
1. I will invite everyone to the table
2. I will embrace the promises God has my New Life
community
3. I will be the church and not just do church
