Why Church P3: PENTECOST POWER

Pericope: Acts 2: 1-4. 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were
all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a
violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they
were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled
with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [a] as the Spirit
enabled them.
Sermon Text: Acts 2:2. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent

Sermon Title: Why Church P3: PENTECOST POWER
Point 1: Conduit of Power – vs.2 "… filled the whole house
Point 2: Curated Power in You vs4 – vs. 2-4 2 … where they were
sitting. 3 … fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of
them were filled … [REPEAT]. The church is not the only place where
God’s power rests via the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost rests on and in
us.
The curation takes place as a result of four P’s: Prayer, Place,
Posture," Plea. The 120 were praying for 10 days. That does not
mean you have to pray for 10 days to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
1. Prayer: in part, means they were obedient to what Jesus told
them, Acts 1:4, 5 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with
them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem,
but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard
me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few
days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
2. Place: Where you are is very important when it comes down to
being baptized in the Holy Ghost. It’s not likely to happen at
home, club, car, but it can. Baptism in the Holy Ghost is likely
to happen in the church. Why? The manifestation of the Holy
Ghost creates the atmosphere. There has to be agreement in
the room in order for the Holy Ghost to have free reign in the
place. That's why you here prophets encourage praise/worship
in prophetic moments
3. Posture: The disposition of your heart towards God and your
self is a reflection and examination is critical. You must have a
healthy sense of your humility and its need to be engulfed by
the Holy Ghost. God hones in on our posture. He told David a
broken and contrite heart he won’t deny. Humility is a
disposition toward God that I need more of you and less of me.
4. Plea: Ask God to baptize you and thank him. Watch him do it.
How do you know you’ve been baptized with the holy Ghost?
Speaking in tongues is one way but not the only way. Let me
try to describe it.
a. Overwhelming
b. Overshadowing
c. A “going-in” praise/thanksgiving
d. Peace
e. A strong sense of transcendence
Point 3: Counter Culture – vs. 6-13 6 When they heard this sound, a
crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their
own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all
these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us
hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites;
residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and
Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near
Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism);
Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in
our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another,
“What does this mean?” 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said,
“They have had too much wine.”
Life Application:
1. How many of you want New Life to be a powerful counterculture
church?
2. How many of you are willing to say it begins with you (one
accord)?
3. How many of you want to be baptized in the Holy Ghost?
