Title: This is How We Do It: I’m Not A Slave Anymore
Pericope: Duet. 5:1-15 NIV
Text: Duet. 5:15 NIV
Memory Verse: Matthew 11:29-30 NET
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Deuteronomy 5:12-15 NIV
12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded
you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a
sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son
or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your
animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female
servants may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that
the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an
outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the
Sabbath Day.
Point 1 - Take the time to remember, you are not what you used to be - “Remember
that you were slaves in the land of Egypt”
Point 2 - God has the power to reorder our way of life “that the Lord your God
brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.”
Point 3 - His commands are for our good Therefore the Lord your God has
commanded you to observe the Sabbath Day.
Life Application:
1. This week, keep a tally of when you rest. What does that rest look like for you?
2. Ask the Lord in prayer this week. Is there anything that keeps me from yielding to
your authority in my life?
