The Word on Wednesday - From Promise to Provision Series
FROM PROMISE TO PROVISION: "WHEN GOD MAKES SOME NOISE!"

Pericope: 2 Kings 6:24–7:20
Sermon Text: 2 Kings 7:4–7 (NIV) 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”
5 At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, 6 for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us!” 7 So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.
Gem: "Just because you don't know what God is doing doesn't mean God isn't doing something!"
Review: What is Providence?
The Latin providere combines pro, meaning before, and videre, meaning to see.
Providence is more than divine foresight. It is God's active care, preservation, and governance of creation as He accomplishes His purposes.
Three dimensions emerge:
- God sees ahead — Foreknowledge (Isaiah 46:9–10).
- God works ahead — Preparation (Genesis 22:8, 14).
- God works through it all — Governance (Romans 8:28).
Point 1: Providence and Prophecy: God Declared the Provision Before Anyone Could See It 2 Kings 7:1–2 Elisha announces the word of the Lord: "About this time tomorrow, a seah of the finest flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria." (NIV)
Gem #1: "Never allow the scarcity of your circumstances to become the standard by which you measure the sufficiency of God."
Gem #2: "The prophecy tells you what God has promised. Providence is God working out what He has promised."
- God's __________ announces the provision.
- God's __________ prepares the way for provision.
Point 2: The Obedience: Four Lepers Moved Toward a Provision They Could Not See 2 Kings 7:3–5 Verse 3: "Why stay here until we die?" (NIV)
1. Don't Just Sit There — Obedience Requires Movement
Gem #3: "You can believe in God's provision and still miss an opportunity because you refuse to move."
Gem #4: "Don't marry your misery when God has not finished writing your story!"
2. Don't Just Die There — Obedience Requires Courage
Gem #5: "You don't have to understand everything God is doing to participate in something God is doing."
Gem #6: "Don't funeralize your future because your present circumstances look terminal
3. Speak Up, Get Up, Live Up — Obedience Positions Us for Discovery Verse 5: "At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans." (NIV)
Gem #7: "Sometimes the provision is not waiting for you to create it; it's waiting for you to discover it."
- Our __________ positions us to participate in God's unfolding plan.
- Don't just __________ there! Obedience requires movement.
- Don't just __________ there! Obedience requires courage.
- Speak Up, Get Up, __________ Up!
Point 3: The Sound: God Made the Enemy Hear What Wasn't There! 2 Kings 7:6–7 Verse 6 explains why the lepers found an abandoned camp: "For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army..." (NIV)
- THE PROPHECY
- God announces food will be available — v. 1
- THE MOVEMENT
- Four lepers rise and go toward the camp — v. 5
- THE SOUND
- God causes the enemy to hear an army — v. 6
- THE PROVISION
- The enemy flees, leaving its supplies — vv. 7–8
- THE FULFILLMENT
- The city receives food as prophesied — vv. 16–18
Five Revelations About the Sound
- First: The sound was supernatural in origin.
- Second: The sound affected the enemy's perception.
- Third: The sound produced an immediate response.
- Fourth: The sound removed the obstacle to provision.
- Fifth: The sound helped fulfill the prophetic word.
Gem #8: "God can change your circumstances without changing your location!"
7. The Lord caused the Arameans to hear a __________ .
Point 4: The Provision: What God Provides Is Not Always Just for You
2 Kings 7:8–11
Verse 9:
"What we're doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves." (NIV)
- The enemy abandoned the camp, making the __________ accessible.
- The lepers discovered that good news must be __________ .
Gem #13: "God didn't provide enough for four men to survive; He opened a supply that could feed a starving city."
Gem #14: "When God's providence changes your condition, don't forget the people still living in the condition you escaped."
Gem #15: "The blessing becomes bigger when the beneficiaries become messengers."
Point 5: The Fulfillment: God's Promise Was Bigger Than Their Perception 2 Kings 7:16–20
- 10.The prophecy was __________ , just as the Lord had declared.
Conclusion: "While You Were Walking, God Was Working!"
LifeChanger Confession
I believe God's promises. I trust God's providence. I will respond with faithful obedience. I will not marry my misery, funeralize my future, or surrender to fear. Even when I cannot see the provision, I know God is able to work beyond what I can see. I will speak up, get up, and live up to His calling. And when God provides, I will share the good news so others can experience His goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen!
