Loveology: There’s No Middle Ground

Bible Study Outline: 1 John 2:9-11

Text: 1 John 2:9-11 (NIV)
Vs.9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Vs.10 Anyone who loves their brother or sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. Vs.11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

Bible Study Title: Loveology: There’s No Middle Ground
Point 1: The claim versus the reality…. Vs.9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
Galatians 6:3; If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.
Point 2: Living in the Light does not cause my brother/sister to stumble… Vs.10 Anyone who loves their brother or sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.
Romans 14:13 “Therefore let us not pass judgement on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way od a brother.”
Point 3: Light/Love cannot coexist together with darkness…. Vs.11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
Proverbs 10:12; Hatred stirs up strife, but LOVE covers all offenses.
2 Corinthians 6:14; Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can LIGHT have with DARKNESS?
Application:
- Examine your heart….are you claiming to be in the light, but secretly harboring hate towards someone
- Examine your actions..are they driven by love or by boxes to check off a “to-do” list
- Pray for those who have hurt you
