July 16 The Finisher: Finish What You Started
The Finisher: Finish What You Started

Pericope: Philippians 1:3-11 3 I thank my God every time I
remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with
joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first
day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good
work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ
Jesus. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I
have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or
defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s
grace with me. 8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the
affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And this is my prayer: that your
love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of
insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may
be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of
righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and
praise of God
Sermon Text: Philippians 1:6 6 being confident of this, that he
who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until
the day of Christ Jesus.
Sermon Title: The Finisher: Finish What You Started
Finish 1: Don’t Start Nothing, It Won’t Be Nothing – Joshua
3:13 (NIV) 13 And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of
the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its
waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”
Genesis 22:12 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not
do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you
have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
Finish 2: Completed Before It Was Started
Isaiah 46:10 I make known the end from the beginning, from
ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand,
and I will do all that I please.’
Daniel 2:28 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals
mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen
in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through
your mind as you were lying in bed are these:
Romans 8:29 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be
conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Finish 3: A Work In Progress
Ephesians 2:10 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to
do.
a. Master Builder 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 (ESV) 10 According to
the grace of God given to me, like a skilled [a] master builder I
laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let
each one take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can
lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus
Christ.
b. Firm Foundation Mathew 7:24-27 (TLV) 24 “Therefore
everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them will
be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the
rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
against that house; and yet it did not fall, for its foundation
had been built on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these
words of Mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish
man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and
the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that
house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”
c. Finish of Faith Hebrews 12:12 (NIV) 12 Therefore,
strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.
Life Application:
A. God is looking for you to be consistent and Satan is trying to
get you live a random life – be consistent – start with Jesus
B. You are a unique piece of work in progress Find your fit
Ephesians 2:10, 19, 20 (NIV) 10 For we are God’s
handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God
prepared in advance for us to do. 19 Consequently, you are no
longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s
people and also members of his household, 20 built on the
foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus
himself as the chief cornerstone.
C. God is not finished with New Life. We have been called
together so He can finish what He started 2 Corinthians 12:12
(NIV) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a
true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.
