Pentecost: The After Party Pt. 2: The Process

Pericope: Acts 2:42–47; Acts 4:32–37 NIV 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Sermon Text: Acts 4:32 RSV  Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had everything in common.

Sermon Title: Pentecost: The After Party Pt. 2: The Process

Point 1: The Process Required Commitment

Acts 2: 42 NIV They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

The Greek word for devoted as it is used in the text pro-kar-te-re-o to continue steadfastly, to persist, or to be constant or consistent presence, constantly diligent in a place to attend assiduously in a person to adhere as a servant.

Point 2: The Process Required Connection

Acts 2:44 “All the believers were together” Acts 4:32… one in heart…

The Greek word is epi to auto. It means to be in one place and one mind and one heart

Point 3: The Process Required Contribution

Acts 4: 34 NIV There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales

Moses experience this. Exodus 36:5-7- 5 and said to Moses, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done.”

6 Then Moses gave an order and they sent this word throughout the camp: “No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” And so the people were restrained from bringing more, 7 because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.
