June 18th Man, Who Are You?
Man, Who Are You?

Pericope: Genesis 1:27; 2:18-23 27 So God created mankind in his
own image, in the image of God he created them; male and
female he created them. 18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for
the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild
animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man
to see what he would name them [give them identity]; and
whatever the man called each living creature, that was its
name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in
the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God
caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was
sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the
place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the
rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man
Sermon Text Genesis 2:23 23 “This is now bone of my bones and
flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken
out of man.”
Sermon Title: Man, Who Are You!
Point 1: Samson Identity - Judges 14 :2-3 2 When he [Samson]
returned, he [Samson] said to his father and mother, “I have seen
a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”
3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable
woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must
you go to the uncircumcised [unequally yoked] Philistines to get
a wife?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s
the right one for me.”
Judges 16:1 One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a
prostitute [not Delilah]. He went in to spend the night with her.
Judges 16: 4 Sometime later, he fell in love with a woman in the
Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.
• Daddy go get her for me
• I want her
• Defeated the Philistines three times
Judges 13:3-5 3 The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said,
“You are barren and childless, but you are going to become
pregnant and give birth to a son. 4 Now see to it that you drink no
wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything
unclean. 5 You will become pregnant and have a son whose head
is never to be
touched by a razor because the boy is to be a
Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in
delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”
• His identity was set at birth.
• Jeremiah said Jeremiah 1:5 - “Before I formed you in the
womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart;
[God gave Jerimiah an identity before he was born]
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
• Identity was not his physique, but his devotion.
Point 2: Saul Identity
1Samuel 10:1, 24 1 Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and
poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not
the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? 24 Samuel said to
all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has hosen? There is
no one like him among all the people.” Then the people shouted,
“Long live the king!”
• 1 Samuel 13:9,13 9 So he said, “Bring me the burnt
offering and the fellowship offerings.” And Saul offered up
the burnt offering. [he was not a priest]
• 1 Samuel 14:24 24 Now the Israelites were in distress that
day, because Saul had bound the people under an
oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before
evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my
enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food. [gave bad
orders flawed leadership positional orders not
relational orders]
• 1 Samuel 17:38 38 Then Saul dressed David in his
own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze
helmet on his head. [thinks the clothes of his position
wins battles]
• 1 Samuel 18: 6-8 6 When the men were returning home
after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out
from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing
and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and
lyres. 7 As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his
thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” 8 Saul was
very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have
credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but
me [Saul] with only thousands. What more can he get but
the kingdom?” [outperformed because he thinks its
positional identity that gives victory—jealousy rises]
Point 3: Adam Identity Genesis 1: 28 (c) …subdue it and have
dominion…[physical/prowess identity] 2:15, 20-23
15
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of
Eden to work it [positional identity] and take care of it. 20 So the
man gave names to all the livestock [positional identity], the
birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable
helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a
deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s
ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God
made a woman from the rib [ he had taken out of the man, and he
brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my
bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she
was taken out of man.
• Adam sees himself “a-last bone of my bone flesh of my
flesh”
• Gives her another name - woman
• Does not confuse himself, or want to be herself but himself
Genesis 3:9 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are
you?” and I hide my identity Genesis 3:10 10 He answered, “I
heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was
naked; so, I hid.”
There is nothing wrong with searching for your identity. As you
develop as a man, you will go through the stages of male identity
development.

• Position Saul ID
We are made in the image of Jesus. We are more bearers. Even
Jesus asked a simple question in Matthew: 16:13-14,15 13 When
Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied,
“Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others,
Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of
the living God.”
