Adam & Eve: Therapy for Everyone

Pericope: Genesis 1:27; 2:18-23 27 So God created mankind in his
own image, in the image of God he created them; male and
female he created them. 18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for
the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild
animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man
to see what he would name them [give them identity]; and
whatever the man called each living creature, that was its
name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in
the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God
caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was
sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the
place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the
rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man
Sermon Text Genesis 2:23 23 “This is now bone of my bones and
flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken
out of man.”
Sermon Title: Adam and Eve: Therapy for Everyone
Review:
Samson Identity - Judges 14 :2-3 2 When he [Samson] returned,
he [Samson] said to his father and mother, “I have seen a
Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”
3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable
woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must
you go to the uncircumcised [unequally yoked] Philistines to get
a wife?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s
the right one for me.”
Saul Identity
1Samuel 10:1, 24 1 Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and
poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not
the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? 24 Samuel said to
all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has hosen? There is
no one like him among all the people.” Then the people shouted,
“Long live the king!”
Adam Identity Genesis 1: 28 (c) …subdue it and have
dominion…[physical/prowess identity] 2:15, 20-23
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of
Eden to work it [positional identity] and take care of it. 20 So the
man gave names to all the livestock [positional identity], the
birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable
helper was found.
Point 1: Eve Identity Gen 2:20b But for Adam no suitable
helper was found. Distortions
o Gen 3:1b - He said to the woman, “Did God really say,
‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?””
• Seduced Eve
o Gen 3:6b - she took some and ate it. She also gave
some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
• Served
o Gen 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig
leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
• Sewed
o Gen 3:14 “Because you have done this, “Cursed are
you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will
crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of

covering.”
• Eph 5:21 “Submit to one another out of reverence for
Christ.”
c) Destined for destiny
Point 2: Single Identity Ps 8:4-6 “what is mankind that you are
mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have
made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with
glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your
hands; you put everything under their feet:”
Point 3: Identity for us all
a) Relationship chemical release
Simon Sinek, in his book, Leaders Eat Last, explains the
science behind our need for relationships. He describes that
“there are four primary chemicals in our body that contribute
to our positive feelings: endorphins, dopamine, serotonin
and oxytocin.
b) Community – Gen 2:18 - “The Lord God said, “It is not good
for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for
him.””
c) Connection – 1 Pet 4:8 - “Above all, love each other deeply,
because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
Life Application
1. If you are married understand and apply the biblical principle
your identity initiative.
2. If you are single don’t dis your identity – ride it
3. You are an image bearer – walk in it accept Christ into your
life. Romans 8:29 - “For those God foreknew he also
predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he
might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”
